Presell like a pro
If you want to make more money as an affiliate, you must presell.
Before we start, let’s talk about what preselling actually is. Preselling is both an art and a science. And it’s function is to prepare your reader to buy something. Then when they’re ready, refer them to the product website so they can buy it. And if it’s done properly, the process is completely sub-conscious.
In a nutshell, you provide value. And then refer them to the product website. In just a minute, I’ll explain exactly how to presell. But before we do, you need to know why it’s so important. Just a few of the reasons you want to presell.
- It builds trust – Once you have your readers’ trust, they will click your links more readily. And the more clicks you get the more sales you’ll make.
- It takes your reader out of defense mode – When you’re not hyping or pitching a product, your reader lets their guard down. This means they are more open to what you’re saying. So your content get absorbed.
- It creates buying readiness – Your readers are now receiving your message. So they become more receptive to other messages. For example, the sales message on the page you’re linking to. And being open to the information there means they are much more likely to buy.
- It increases your sales – You’ve prepped them and referred them in the right state of mind. Open to the sales message and feeling safe. This dramatically boosts your sales rate!
- It increases customer satisfaction – Your referral now feels like they decided to buy. Versus being pitched or convinced. And this makes them feel better about the product they purchased.

OK, now you understand why it’s so important. And hopefully you’re convinced you need to start doing it. So, it’s time to break down how it works. As I mentioned earlier, it’s both an art and a science.
Mastering the art
Effective preselling requires gaining your readers trust in order for them to let down their guard. And the only method of doing this is to give exceptional value to your readers. Now, providing enough info to be useful, but still making them want more – that’s the art of it. So you send them to the product website with a hunger for more of what the product provides. Plus they’re not guarded, so they’re more open and likely to purchase the product.
Scientific preselling
There’s also a specific formula you need to follow.
One of these key elements is the presentation of the information. You have to have your end in mind. In the end, you want to sell a specific product. How can providing information accomplish this goal? One way is to give them enough info to whet the appetite, but not enough to satisfy it. The second way is to provide all the information and let your reader discover how hard it is to actually implement it. In either case, the product you’re referring them to solves the problem for them.
But you can’t link to your affiliate link. You have directly to the home page of the product. That’s because nobody likes to click on affiliate links. But, without your affiliate link, how do you get credit? Well, that’s part of the science of this whole process. You “pre-cookie” your reader before sending them to the sales page.
You also want to link to the sales page from inside your article’s content. It’s habitual to click on words and phrases that are hyperlinked. Plus, if you link on relevant words, it only makes sense to click on there.
What you have now is a super powerful system for affiliate marketing success.
OK, here’s the not-so-good news:
It’s extremely difficult to do this correctly. Think about everything that goes into crafting an effective preselling article: Good content. First and foremost, you have to be able to write a great article that provides valuable information. Which means you need to be both knowledgable on the subject and capable of writing a high-quality article. Writing to presell. First, you have to give good information. But, you also need to know how to present the information in a way that give value to the reader. And somehow also make them want to learn more. Or provide so much information that they see how hard it will be to implement.
Product selection. You also need to determine what products you’ll be preselling. If you can manage to get the article written well. All your efforts are wasted if you send your reader to the wrong sales letter.
The technical know-how One of the keys to this system is using “covert cookies” for the tracking. This is pretty easy – you just make a 1 pixel X 1 pixel image with no border and make the “source” of the image your affiliate link. (But if you do it wrong, you won’t get paid for the traffic you send.)
